What is Phentramine?

Oral Phentramine Hydrochloride (HCL) is sold for weight loss. It is in the Sympathomimetic family of appetite suppressants (used for the short-term management of exogenous obesity.) When used in conjunction with diet, exercise, and behavior therapy, Phentramine may help you to lose weight while you are learning new ways to eat and to exercise.

History of Phentramine

Phentramine is the most commonly prescribed prescription appetite suppressant, accounting for 50% of the prescriptions. Part of this reason is because it's significantly cheaper than the other major FDA-approved diet drugs, Meridia and Xenical. Phentramine first received approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1959 as an appetite suppressant for the short-term treatment of obesity. Phentramine resin became available in the United States in 1959 and Phentramine Hydrochloride in the early 1970s. In the US, Phentramine is currently sold under the brand names Ionamin® (Medeva Pharmaceuticals) and Adipex-P® (Gate Pharmaceuticals). It is also available as a generic medication, known as 'Phentramine'. Previously, it was sold under the name Fastin® (formerly produced by King Pharmaceuticals for SmithKline Beecham). In December 1998, SK-Beecham withdrew Fastin from the market. As Phentramine is an older drug, no new efficacy trials have been conducted. The one notable exception, are several trials on the combination of Phentramine and Fenfluramine in the early and mid 1990s.

How does Phentramine work?

Phentramine works by stimulating the hypothalamus gland and affecting certain neurotransmitters to decrease appetite. The hypothalamus is the region of the brain that controls the autonomic nervous system, regulating sleep cycles, body temperature, appetite, etc.

Proper Use of Phentramine

Phentramine should be taken on an empty stomach, once daily, prior to breakfast. If in tablet form, the tablet may be broken or cut in half. Do NOT break, crush, or chew tablets. As Phentramine may disrupt normal sleep patterns, avoid taking a dose late in the day. If taking more than one dose a day, take the last dose approx. 4-6 hours prior to going to bed. The following information is specific only to the average doses of Phentramine. The recommended dose of Phentramine may be different for different patients. If your dose is different, do NOT change it unless your doctor tells you to do so. Adults under Age 60 Oral dosage form (Capsules) - 15 to 37.5 mg once/day before breakfast or 1-2 hours after breakfast. Oral dosage form (Tablets) - 15 to 37.5 mg once/day before breakfast or 1-2 hours after breakfast. Instead of taking it once a day, your doctor may tell you to take 15 to 37.5 mg in divided doses one-half hour before meals. Oral resin dosage form (Capsules) - 15 to 30 mg once/day before breakfast. Adults Age 60 and Over A reduced dosage may be necessary. Consult your physician. Infants and Children Phentramine is NOT recommended for children under age 16.

Maximum Dosage Recommendations

Take Phentramine ONLY as directed by your doctor. Do NOT take more of it Do NOT take it more often, and Do NOT take it for a longer time than your doctor ordered. If too much Phentramine is taken, it may cause unwanted effects or become habit-forming. Please speak with your doctor if you think that Phentramine is not working properly after you have taken it for a few weeks. DO NOT increase the dose.

Storage

Keep this and all medications out of children's reach. Store away from heat and direct light. Do NOT store in the bathroom, near the kitchen sink, or in other damp places. Heat or moisture may cause the medicine to break down. Do NOT keep outdated medicine past the expiration date. Discarded medicine should be kept out of children's reach.

Ending Phentramine Treatment

After you stop taking Phentramine, your body may need time to adjust. The length of time this takes depends on the amount of medicine you were using and how long you used it. During this time, speak to your doctor if you notice any side effects (as noted above in Physical or Mental Dependence on Phentramine). If you have been taking Phentramine in large doses or for a long period of time, do NOT stop taking it without first consulting your doctor. S/he may want you to gradually reduce the amount you are taking before stopping completely. This will help prevent withdrawal side effects.

Important Notes concerning Phentramine and Weight Loss

Phentramine should NOT be used as a substitute for proper diet or exercise. For maximum effects, it must be used in conjunction with a reduced-calorie diet and/or exercise. Any modifications in your diet, activity level, and behavior must be developed and continued long-term in order to continue losing weight and prevent the lost weight from returning. As Phentramine is similar chemically to amphetamines, taking Phentramine may cause a positive result in urine screening tests for amphetamines. Do NOT share your Phentramine prescription with others.
